The Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016 has been enacted with effect from 2nd October 2016 to enact, implement and encourage the complete prohibition of liquor and drugs in the State of Bihar.
For the said Act, in November 2017, a Prohibition Unit in Criminal Investigation Department (CID), then after Prohibition Division under the police headquarters, was created to monitor the works related to the Prohibition and to achieve the goal of complete prohibition in accordance with the criteria set by the State Government.
Prohibition Division is headed by the Additional Director General of Police (Prohibition), who is assisted by the Superintendent of Police (Prohibition).
The main functions being carried out by Prohibition Division include the exchange and monitoring of intelligence from the Excise department, Special Branch, Economic offense unit, and various district police, action against suspects, conducting and monitoring of focused S-drives against liquor, undertaking Investigation of the cases on the orders of Principal Secretary / Secretary, Home Department, Bihar, Patna, Director General of Police, Bihar and as per the requirements, monitoring the speedy trial, monitoring the action of confiscation of property of the accused, coordinating with the border States and other departments, and taking disciplinary action against the officers and employees of all the departments involved in the activities of negligence in implementing this law and promoting illegal liquor to make complete prohibition effective.
