1. Background
For the security/protection of every state in India, protection of legal laws, maintenance of law and order, and protection of life and property of common citizens, armed police force units have been established in their respective states.
The Bihar Military Police First Battalion "Gorkha Battalion" was established in 1880 under the name New Reserve Force. In 1892, after merging Bihar, Bengal, and Odisha, it was renamed Bengal Military Police. In 1905, its name was changed to GMP (Gorkha Military Police). From 1905 to 1948, it was deputed in various states of the country.
After the country's independence, GMP was renamed BMP (Bihar Military Police). After the Bihar Special Armed Police Act, 2021 came into effect from 24.03.2021, it is known as BSAP (Bihar Special Armed Police). Bihar Special Armed Police is divided into 2 zones, known as Central Zone, Patna and Northern Zone, Muzaffarpur.
Currently, 22 battalions are physically functioning under Bihar Special Armed Police in various districts, and 01 training center (MPTC, Dumraon) is also operational. The Bihar Special Armed Police Directorate is located at Sardar Patel Bhawan, 5th Floor, Bailey Road, Patna.
BSAP has been given the responsibility of security of important establishments in the state like Darbhanga and Purnia airports, Mahabodhi Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site) at Bodh Gaya, Metro Rail, etc., which is being efficiently performed by BSAP personnel.
Additionally, responsibilities such as protection of cultural and historical heritage, conducting fair elections, etc., are being carried out by BSAP police personnel with discipline and ease.
Various components of Bihar Special Armed Police are as follows:

Riot Control Battalion: Currently, 03 riot control battalions are functioning under Bihar Special Armed Police, namely BSAP-6, Muzaffarpur/7, Katihar/(Women), Sasaram.

Against Criminal and Militant Activities: For action against criminal and militant activities, currently BSAP-4, Dumraon/12/15, Supaul/17, Bodh Gaya IRB/SIRB is functioning.

Women Security Unit: To provide safe, fearless, and proper equal participation to women in society and maintain a strong atmosphere and law and order, BSAP (Women), Sasaram is functioning.

Tribal Community Empowerment: Swabhiman Battalion, Valmikinagar, Bagaha has been created for the work efficiency, hard work, and social upliftment of women of the notified tribal community in Bihar State and for empowerment of Scheduled Tribe community women.

Mounted Police Battalion: One mounted police battalion is also functioning under BSAP, which provides support to local police in law and order and remote diara areas.

State Industrial Security Force: To make the state's industrial policy successful, strengthen the security of public sector commercial and industrial enterprises, and provide security to other establishments, two battalions of State Industrial Security Force under BSAP, SISF-1 and SISF-2 have been created at BSAP-18, Dumraon and 19, Begusarai respectively.

Police Sports Management: Bihar Police personnel participate in various competitions organized by All India Police Sports Control Board. All work related to police sports competitions is done by BSAP. Currently, Inspector General of Police, BSAP, Bihar, Patna is designated as Nodal and Deputy Inspector General of Police, BSAP (Central Zone), Patna as Additional Nodal for all works related to Bihar Police sports.

General Duties: Provides support to local police in general law and order, crime control, elections, disasters, etc.
2. Administrative Structure
1. The head of Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP) is an officer of the rank of Director General of Police or Additional Director General of Police. Currently, an officer of the rank of Director General of Police is its head. For their support, Additional Director General of Police, Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police, and other officers are working in the directorate.
