Economic Offences form a special category of criminal offences. Economic Offences not only victimize individuals with pecuniary losses but can also have serious repercussions on the national economy. Economic offences, such as counterfeiting of currency, financial scams, fraud, money laundering, etc. are crimes which cause serious concerns and impact the security and governance of the nation, as well. Also, with the evergrowing use of technology, Cyber Crimes form another special category of criminal offences.

In order to prevent, control, and investigate the rising menace of Economic and Cyber Crimes in the state of Bihar, the Government of Bihar, on 01/12/2011, established a special unit under the Bihar Police, namely, Economic Offences Unit, Bihar, Patna, which forms the Economic and Cyber Crimes Division of the Bihar Police Headquarter. Apart from investigating major cases of importance and scale of Economic and Cyber Crimes in the state of Bihar, the E.O.U., also undertakes major public awareness programmes to sensitize the public and the officials, against such crimes, for prevention and awareness. It also conducts and imparts special training to Police Officials and Personnel, Judicial Officers, and Law Officers / Prosecutors, in the areas of Cyber Crime Awareness / Investigation, Cyber Laws and the NDPS Act. The E.O.U. also takes necessary actions on the public complaints and grievances of the public related to Economic and Cyber Crimes, in the state of Bihar. It has its own Economic Offences Police Station.

The Economic and Cyber Crimes Division is headed by the Additional Director General of Police (Economic Offences Unit), assisted by a Deputy Inspector General of Police (Economic Offences Unit) and three Superintendents of Police (Economic Offences Unit), further assisted by Deputy Superintendent of Police rank officers, as posted by the Government of Bihar, from time to time.
